La Rochelle was badly hit by storm Xynthia in February 2010 (6 dead, 280 Million Euros in damage). Rather than rebuilding the identical, the city of La Rochelle has implemented a PAPI (Programme d'Actions de Prévention des Inondations / Flood Prevention Action Program). The decision was made to protect the entire population against the risk "Xynthia + 20cm".
While the country plays Russian roulette with the flood risk (every year, there is a 1 in 100 chance of experiencing a devastating flood costing 30 billion euros: see the article), some companies are seizing the chance to call on new technology in order to reduce their exposure to this risk.
A year on from the floods of June 2016, the French are still not safe from the risk of flooding.
