Heightening of a hydroelectric dam. Fortuna | Panama – 2003

In 2003 MegaSecur worked in Panama on the hydroelectric dam Edwin Fabrega. The dam is located in the west of the country (65 km north of Chiriqui) on the Rio Brazo de Hornito, a region known for its very heavy rainfall. Built in 1983, the Fortuna dam provides 40% of the country’s electricity.

During heavy rain, one lateral side, upstream the main dam is regularly submerged, disrupting the general operation of the dam and the surrounding ecosystem.

The challenge is to provide a 2 metres high flexible dam, installed at the top of this lateral part, to contain the rising waters.
A Water-Gate© Protection Barrier of 2 metres high x 90 meters long (i.e 4 barriers of 15 m) is delivered and installed dry with teams from Fortuna’s dam to train staff in its implementation.

The dam has been used but never to its maximum height.
